Located in Glastonbury, Somerset, Finlandya Custom is an independent garage known for its expert craftsmanship, specialist services, customer service and dedication to quality vehicle care. We proudly serve both the local community and clientelle from across the UK & Europe, offering tailored solutions for every vehicle.
Our Journey
Our story began in 1993 at Holywell Farm, where Rob established the business at just 20 years old after completing his Land Rover apprenticeship at an independent Landrover Specialist. Starting out on his own, Rob quickly built a reputation for quality and reliability. As demand grew, he welcomed Phil as a business partner, and together they expanded the team to five skilled mechanics. In those early days, vehicle repairs were even carried out over an open pit — a true testament to our humble beginnings.
With growth came the need for more space, leading to our move to a brand-new site at Thomas Way Industrial Estate in Glastonbury. From there, we operated across three buildings and two yards, marking a major step forward for the business. This phase saw the addition of our first body shop, MOT station, and in-house LPG refuelling facilities.
Thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations and a loyal customer base, our team expanded once again — growing from five to ten members.
Recognising yet another need for expansion, we began planning and constructing a new site back at Holywell Farm in November 2019. The Project was named Operation Orbis (in Latin; to go full circle). Construction initially went smoothly — until the COVID-19 pandemic struck in early 2020. Compounding the challenge, Somerset experienced some of its wettest weather on record, delaying progress further. When lockdowns halted work and many tradespeople withdrew, Rob and his family took matters into their own hands — continuing construction during evenings, weekends, and daylight hours.
When restrictions eased, loyal customers and friends, many on furlough, generously volunteered their time to help complete the build. Their support was nothing short of incredible — without them, the project might never have been finished.
As if that wasn’t enough, our bank funding was withdrawn mid-project. The only institution willing to back us was Reliance Bank, owned by the Salvation Army. They believed in our vision and provided the support we needed to complete construction. We remain sincerely grateful to them for helping make Orbis Yard a reality.
After years of determination and hard work, the new Orbis Yard and workshop were finally completed. The new premises, built in a traditional style with green roofs, timber cladding, and surrounded by an orchard and wildlife pond, offer customers a welcoming and peaceful environment to explore while visiting.
The bespoke design of our building even caught the attention of Mendip District Council, earning a nomination for a National Design Award — an achievement we’re immensely proud of.
Today, Orbis Yard stands not only as a fully operational workshop but as a symbol of perseverance, teamwork, and community spirit.
